Why Choose a Social Work Career?

Choosing a career can be tough, and it can often feel like there is an inordinate amount of pressure to make the right choice. It is true that people suit different professions to each other and finding one that feels right for you will be important to your mental and physical wellbeing. If you find yourself caring about others, wanting to help, wanting to improve people’s situations, or empathetic to the circumstances that others find themselves in, you might naturally gravitate toward social work career as a profession.

This piece will discuss why you should choose social work as a career, and help you decide if it is the best option for you. 

Why is Social Work Important?

Social work covers a wide variety of brackets and is really important for the health and wellbeing of the community. The quickest way to sum up social work is that it is a profession of care. It helps meets the complex and varied needs of everyone, with a significant emphasis on those who are vulnerable, oppressed, or who need additional care. 

This line of work is one that can help change the lives of many in a meaningful way, and you will have the opportunity to create significant change for those who need someone to advocate for them. 

There is a specific focus on people and their environments, which means it a career route that is very individual centered. You do need qualifications such as Online Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, but your interpersonal skills, such as communication, are equally as important. 

If you want to improve people’s situations or you're empathetic to other's circumstances, a social work career might be right for you.

You Are Always the Person Helping 

If you are always someone who can be seen helping from the side lines under any circumstances, you will more than likely find a job in the social care sector that you can find rewarding and put your skills to use. The world will always need people willing to help, and who will extend empathy and a hand to those who need it the most, so there will never be any shortage for that demand. 

It is A Varied Career Path

When you are in social work, no two days are the same. Though you might find that you will work on a specific case or you might go into a specific area of social work, there will always be the option for you to do something different or try a different route. That being said, there is also the chance to build up a career that is familiar, which will allow you to see the progress that individuals and families make throughout treatments and visits. You will become a friendly and reliable face that they know they can count on, which is another great aspect of social work. 

Social workers often have a strong sense of justice and want to be a voice for those who do not have one. Whether they work in homeless shelters or hospitals, the aim remains the same – help those who need it the most.
