I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual by Luvvie Ajayi

Luvvie shared the truth in “I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual.” If my conscience had a voice of its own, it would speak the same words I read in Luvvie Ajayi‘s book. “I’m Judging You,” discusses many controversial issues such as feminism, religion, online etiquette, relationships, sexuality, race, etc. I admire that Luvvie spoke from her heart, which urges me to highly recommend this book to all of my readers. Half way through the book, I texted my close friend and said, “Girl have you heard about Luvvie Ajayi’s book? She’s Nigerian too, so it’s definitely one that we need to support.”I'm Judging You by Luvvie Ajayi review

Frankly, I must admit, the book caught me off guard because I wasn’t expecting to be chided for being complacent with traditional ignorance. I also, wasn’t expecting to be challenged for not taking a stand about current events. In many ways, for me it was like sitting in church and hearing the Pastor say everything I needed to hear, but was not ready to admit to.

The book reminds me a lot of Ajayi’s blog. The book just puts everything in one consolidated form. She takes subjects that many people do not like discussing in public because they don’t want to say something off-color and tells the world that we have to do-better. She’s right and if reading her book causes us to reevaluate our inner bias, then her manuscript was successful.

From Blogger to Author

Luvvie uses the platform she built from blogging into activism and entrepreneurship. She has branded herself and her work masterfully.  In 2012, I met some of the most successful black blogging influencers: Luvvie, Afrobella, and IssaRae at BlogHer12, then and now they continue to be a blessing to their fans and give us who are aspiring to be successful at our solo entrepreneurial crafts inspiration. To Luvvie, thank you for your willingness to take risks, believing that you can, and being courageous of enough to bring your thoughts to fruition, is truly admirable. Thank you!

Overall, it’s Ajayi’s candor that I most admire. She delivered her honest thoughts in “I’m Judging you,” brilliantly. I can truly say, after reading “I’m Judging You,” I’m a better woman. As a result of reading the book, I’ll be more mindful of how I communicate with my family members, friends, and acquaintances. The essence of Ajayi’s book was captured in this quote: “But one thing is clear: humans excel at using our differences as excuses to act like assholes and torment each other . . . We have created rigid, yet often invisible, systems that keep some people at the top on the backs of others at the bottom, based on their identity markers . . . I am judging all of us for being shitty humans by being culture vultures, homophobic jackasses, racist trolls, sexist douchebags, and born-again hypocrites.”
