Is God Is Review: A Dark, Twisted Thriller That Kept Me Guessing Until the End

Sometimes a movie surprises you. Not because it is packed with special effects or because it follows a familiar formula, but because it manages to be something completely unexpected. That was my experience watching Is God Is.

Before I begin, let me clear up one thing. Despite the title, Is God Is is not a Christian film. If you’re expecting a faith-based movie, this isn’t it. Instead, it is a dark thriller filled with mystery, revenge, action, humor, and enough twists to keep you engaged from beginning to end.

The story centers on twin sisters who were severely burned in a fire started by their father. Years later, they set out on a journey that forces them to confront the trauma of their past while pursuing answers and justice. What unfolds is a gripping story that blends suspense with moments of unexpected comedy.

What I appreciated most was how easy it was to connect with the sisters. Their unique personalities, mannerisms, and interactions brought warmth and humor to an otherwise dark story. Even during some of the film’s most intense moments, some scenes made me laugh out loud. The balance between tension and comedy felt surprisingly natural.

The cast is exceptional. The film features several well-known actors, including Sterling K. Brown, Vivica A. Fox, Janelle Monáe, and Erika Alexander. Each actor brings depth to their role, helping create a story that feels layered and unpredictable.

The performances never felt forced, and the cast worked together to create a world that was both unsettling and fascinating.

One of the film’s greatest strengths is its pacing. There was never a moment when I found myself checking the time or losing interest. Instead, I stayed fully invested in what would happen next. Every scene seemed to reveal another piece of the puzzle while raising new questions along the way.

And then there was the ending.

Without giving away any spoilers, I can honestly say the final scene made my jaw drop. Few movies genuinely surprise me anymore, but Is God Is managed to do exactly that. Long after the credits rolled, I found myself replaying the final moments and thinking about everything that had led up to them.

Watching the film at Alamo Drafthouse in Washington, D.C., made the experience even more enjoyable. Going to the movies has always been one of my favorite forms of self-care. There is something special about sitting in a dark theater, putting aside the responsibilities of everyday life, and allowing yourself to become immersed in a story for a few hours.

If you enjoy action-packed thrillers, dark humor, strong performances, and stories that keep you guessing, Is God Is may be a film worth adding to your watchlist. It is unconventional, intense, and often surprising. Most importantly, it is memorable.
