Have you ever had a dream that you thought wouldn’t come true?
I have wanted to become a children’s book author since I was a child. After, my daughter experienced her first pain crisis due to Sickle Cell Disease my life changed forever. At the time, I put my dreams aside and focused on her and her health.
I didn’t have a support group and I didn’t know anyone who had sickle cell disease. I needed something that would reassure me that she would be fine. Sometimes, what you want and what you need, may not be out there until you create it. So I wrote a book about Sickle Cell Disease. Although many people have created sickle cell books, I wanted one that was interactive where parents could learn alongside their children and connect with them. Once I wrote the book, I got distracted with life and for a while, I gave up on my dream.
Dreams Do Come True
Last summer, I spoke at the Sickle Cell Community Consortium Conference and met several parents who felt the same anxiety as I did, after seeing my child experience a pain crisis. Talking with them, lit a fire within me that encouraged me to dust off my manuscript and publish my book.
Six years after writing the words to my book, I finally held it in my hands for the first time. I even shed a few tears because a lot of time, money, and hard work went into the project to make it a success. I can promise you that when you don’t give up on yourself, it feels good. This email is a reminder to never give up. Remember, that thing you’ve been dreaming about is within your reach!
