The Star of Little Marsai Martin Inspires Young Entrepreneurs

One of the movies that my tween daughters are really anticipating is Little. Marsai Martin inspires by being the youngest Executive Producer in Hollywood. Honestly, the buzz about the young producer was more intriguing to me than the movie itself. Mainly because the storyline for the movie has been a recurring theme in Hollywood for many years, think Opposite Day (2009), The Kid (2000), Jack (1996), Vice Versa (1988), Big (1988), etc. So the concept itself is not new, but having a young adult/teen movie that features black women as the main characters is both unique and exciting. So of course, I was thrilled to be invited to the prescreening of the film.

Marsai Martin inspires by exuding undeniable confidence

Marsai Martin is taking in the world and soaking up all of the life lessons that she can. When I see Marsai, I see a beautiful young woman who is brave, talented, and innovative. During the prescreening, I learned that Martin pitched the movie to executives when she was only 10 years old. The concept was inspired by Big, which was one of her mom’s favorite movies. Marsai took a risk, but was encouraged by her parents to ask for what you want. Today, that risk is paying off for the now 14 years old, who is not only starring in the movie, but also working on her next film with Universal as a filmmaker, StepMonster. As a homeschool mom, I love that she is getting a chance to learn from some of the best in the business. Frankly, formal education often doesn’t even afford a student an opportunity such as the one Marsai is getting.

The Official Movie Summary

Girls Trip’s Regina Hall and Black-ish’s Marsai Martin are the main characters of the movie Little. Both are cast as the character Jordan Sanders — the adult is played by Hall who is an uptight self-absorbed tech mogul and Martin shows up onscreen as the 13-year-old version of Jordan who wakes up in her adult self’s penthouse just before a major career-changing presentation needs to be made. Insecure’s Issa Rae serves as Jordan’s underappreciated assistant April who is the only one of Jordan’s staff members who knows the secret that her boss is now trapped in an awkward tween body. Little is a new take on an old Hollywood comedy staple about the price of success, the power of sisterhood and having a second chance to grow up — and glow up.

The Screening with Comcast NBC Universal

After watching the previews, I wasn’t sure the movie would be interesting to my two 10-year-old daughters. Sure, they are tweens, but some of the movie has adult themes and conversations, which is why it is rated PG 13. As a matter of fact, I want to reiterate that I think the rating for this movie is perfect. After watching the movie, I had to ponder, will I let my 10-year daughters watch Little? Yes, but only because they seem to adore Marsai. When they see her, they see themselves, young, creative, and full of potential. However, it wouldn’t be a review if I didn’t tell you both sides. And the sexual innuendos that the movie provides is a little too mature for my girls, but I think some of the suggestions will just go over their heads. Therefore, I firmly believe if they were closer to 13 it would be a better fit for them.

When I watched Little, I was with my mom who is 81, she thought it was very entertaining and got a kick out Marsai and her beautiful smile. So the movie has a wide appeal. Regarding the movie as a whole, it’s cute, funny, and entertaining, but probably not an award winner.
