How to get back to feeling yourself after childbirth

HOnce a new child has come into the world, your life will fundamentally change – but sometimes, so will how you feel. With postpartum depression, physical changes, and irreversible responsibilities, the effects of childbirth can often leave moms feeling estranged from themselves. While being a mother is one of the most gratifying and rewarding responsibilities to have, it is also one of the most pressured. Here are a few ways to start feeling yourself after such as seismic change in your life.

Don’t rush to lose weight

Be kind to your body. Childbirth is one of the most strenuous tasks your body can go through, and so it’s important that you don’t put it through any more stress. Your body needs to have time to repair after going through such a punishing ordeal, and inflicting a calorie deficit on your body isn’t recommended. It is perfectly normal and natural to have a bit of baby weight for a number of months after you have given birth.

Know your options

The process of childbirth can result in some fundamental changes to your body. Sometimes, it benefits our own peace of mind to know we can change these if we so wish. For example, tearing and scarring is an incredibly common result of childbirth, which many new mothers have thoughts about removing once they have healed. Procedures such as vaginoplasty help to reconstruct the area to its state before childbirth. However, experienced practitioners such as Dr. David Ghozland, M.D. are a must when undergoing cosmetic procedures.

Talk it out

As mentioned previously, postpartum affects countless women across the United States. In fact, baby blues affects 80% of new moms in the US, and 15% experience postpartum depression. It’s important to not suffer alone when it comes to this. If you are really struggling with your mental health, be sure to go and chat to your doctor about potential medical solutions and arrange an appointment with a psychologist or counselor.

Make time for yourself

Let’s be realistic: becoming a new mom means a lot of your time will be spent caring for your newborn child. That doesn’t mean, however, that all of your time must be dedicated to your new identity as a mother. Finding time to read, be creative and take up enjoyable exercise is a great way remember who you are as a person. Asking your partner, friend or relative to take care of your little one for an hour or two while you take some time for leisure is perfectly acceptable. Taking a few hours to yourself allows everyone to see the best side of you: one that is relaxed and collected.

Becoming a new mom puts enough strain on your life as it is, so don’t place anymore on yourself. When it comes to your physical and mental health, remember to use everything that is at your disposal. There are solutions to any ailments you may have, and so it’s just a matter of reaching out to the right professionals.
