Outside of Traditional Medicine

Thinking outside of traditional medicine(1)

About a week ago, I had a conversation with one of my friends. We discussed the medicinal properties of cannabis. We both admitted that we didn’t know much about it, but the topic and medical discussions surrounding it have grown astronomically in recent years. While many people may not dispute the healing properties of cannabis, we agreed that when used properly without smoke inhalation, it could have a beneficial effect on people with a variety of diagnosed medical conditions. I left the conversation feeling like I needed to learn more. Ironically, one of my blog writers, Sam, contributed the following piece that sheds a bit more light on the subject. This isn’t a comprehensive post, but it will peak your interest enough to stir you in the direction to learn more.

If you ever listen to a prescription medicine commercial, you will often hear the side effects listed towards the end of the ad. Many prescription medicines are designed to target one illness and yet will damage other organs and areas of the body. While many people need their prescription medicines to make it through the day, it is simply sad that we have to damage other parts of ourselves in order to manage an illness. It is possible to avoid all of this by maintaining our health in better ways long before we need the prescription medicines. Here are a few things you can do now to improve your health.

Cannibidiol Does The Trick

Cannibidiol (CBD) oils are popular now, and once you understand the benefits, you’ll understand why it’s such a big deal. Many doctors are even sharing the benefits with their patients. CBD benefits are numerous and natural, almost no one has an allergic reaction to hemp. Here are just a few benefits that CBD oil can provide:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anticonvulsant
  • Antioxidant
  • Antipsychotic
  • Antiemetic – fights nausea and vomiting
  • Anxiolytic- fights anxiety

This is just the beginning! As we use CBD oils more, we are sure to find more ways it helps us instead of harming us. If you are under the care of a physician for any illness that CBD oil can help with, make sure to tell your doctor of your use.

Watch the Diet

A lot of our health issues are related to our diet. Focusing on a diet that is rich in vegetables and fruits and healthy proteins is far better than relying on processed meals from the grocery store or quick meals in a fast food drive-through. Ready-made meals and fast food aren’t nearly as healthy for us as we may want to believe. A lot of preservatives go into the food and doesn’t really have any benefit to the body. However, before you think your grocery store is safe, do learn to read your labels! Bread with enriched flour is not remotely close to healthy for you. Overall, if you can’t pronounce the ingredient, you probably should not be eating it. Once you start eating a clean and healthy diet, you will find yourself feeling better, increased energy, and overall better health when you see your family physician.

Sleep When You Need It

Too many of us do not get the right kind of sleep and end up on medications for sleep that never allow our bodies to truly relax and rejuvenate. We spend a lot of time overstimulated and running around way too much for us to truly get rest. When we sleep well, our bodies perform at their best and are longer living. Here are a few suggestions on how you can improve your sleep situation:

  • Turn off your electronics one hour before bed – no phone, no television
  • Take a hot bath, add some lavender oil for extra muscle relaxation
  • Spray your bed down with lavender oil
  • Sip some chamomile tea 30 min before bed
  • Make sure to get at least 30 min of exercise in the morning or early afternoon
  • Do not eat anything heavy before bed, a light salad is best
  • Get blackout curtains for your bedroom
  • Turn out ALL lights in your home
  • If you live in a city, wear earplugs to cancel noise

If you are now on medication for an illness and want to use any of these techniques to improve your health, be sure your physician is aware. Many times doctors watch how other things pan out with a healthy diet, healthy sleeping habits, and natural medicines in conjunction to traditional medicines. If they see how well you are doing and can come off your medicines, they are more likely to share that success story with other patients!
