On Saturday December 20, 2014, my daughter and I went to pay our respects to the Nelson Family. The church was packed to capacity by both the young and old. We sat and listened to the funeral service of the beautiful 5-year-old, Damiyah Telemaque-Nelson, who lost her battle with Burkitt’s lymphoma. As the pastor said, “Because He lives, I know I can face tomorrow, my daughter and I felt peace as we looked up at the many screens which displayed Damiyah’s angelic face. She had a big pretty smile. This was the second time my daughter and I attended a funeral of a 5 year old child who had cancer within a few months of each other. Our hearts ached with sadness. However, we were reassured that Damiyah who was a young champion will continue to live on in the lives of her family and friends.
Damiyah’s parents have an enormous amount of strength. At the end of the service they told us to remember that although Damiyah’s body would be laid to rest, her soul will continue to live on forever. It is hard to comprehend the amount of strength that little ones who suffer with cancer have to endure throughout their treatment process. No one wants to see children in pain and suffering.
There were so many people fighting in Damiyah’s corner and praying for her. One person, was John Wall–a point guard for the Washington Wizards. John Wall, helped make one of Damiyah’s dreams come true. With his help she was able to meet Nicki Minaj and wear one of her pink wigs. Damiyah was a joy for her family and all who knew her. Miyah as she was affectionately called, was a fierce model there were hundreds of pictures of her in the funeral program. She was truly beautiful on the inside and outside. Rest In Peace Miyah!
Our prayers will continually be with all of Damiyah’s family and everyone who was touched by her life. She is gone, but she will never be forgotten.
