Health Moment: Natural Products are Best

Why Use Natural Hair and Skin Products?

  • Are you using bath and beauty products that your friends or parents always used?  Have you ever thought about the ingredients in the products you use?  Here are a few reasons to use natural products.
  • Natural products are made with herbs, vegetable oils, botanical extracts and essential oils.  These simple ingredients are very effective in cleaning and healing.
  • Natural products are free of harsh chemicals that irritate the skin. Remember that what you place on your skin also goes deep within your skin and is absorbed within your pores.
  • Natural products are easily recognized and broken down by the body for maximum effectiveness and long lasting results.
  • Enable us to have good blood, and reduces the incidence of hormonal imbalance, fatigue, headaches, digestive upsets, flu-like symptoms, and aching joints or diseases.
  • Give us peace of mind that we are doing what is best for ourselves, our families and the environment.
  • Reduce medical expenses.  Natural products may cost more; but are safer to use, which therefore may contribute to lower medical bills.
  • For thousands of years natural products were used to heal and clean throughout the world. For example the Bible records that King Hezekiah put figs on his boil [2 Kings 20:7].  Psalms 51:7  states “Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean.”

Why I decided to go Natural

Years ago, I finally decided to go natural.  During the last years of wearing a perm, my hair broke off in the back at least twice and slowly began to grow back. I heard this breaking indicates a need to go to a beauty salon to have your hair treated and maintained, but I had endured enough of coating my hair with chemicals and decided it was definitely time to go natural.

After going natural for a few years, someone mentioned to me I should check the ingredients of my shampoo.  I did.  I also read labels of shampoo in Health Food stores and saw ingredients I couldn’t pronounce.  I wondered, why urea?

This drove me to look on the internet to find a recipe for making my own natural shampoo. I noticed, although the shampoo didn’t make a lot of suds it cleaned my hair, smelled good, felt soft, etc. Even though I was no longer placing relazers on my scalp, I continued to saturate my pours with chemicals found in everyday hair products.

Over time my hair began to grow.  When my hair began to thin out on top, I found a recipe with herbs that would stimulate hair growth. [A friend told me about her husband’s experience with a shampoo containing nettles]. I added nettles to my shampoo and my hair became thicker and continued to grow.

I have also begun treating hair ends with hair butter or one of my other hair oils – to seal in moisture and to keep the strands of my hair from becoming too dry.  As a result, my hair is now longer than it was even a year ago.

I believe eating a plant based diet [lots of fruits and vegetables] has also contributed to hair growth and has lessoned hair breakage.
