5 Summer Getaways for Kids

Creator: Vlado, freedigitalphotos.net

Summer getaways should educate as well as motivate children. The activities should also be both fun and inviting. Here are my top 5 summer getaways that every child should experience.

1. The fascinating museums in Washington, DC.

Some museums of interest to kids ages 5 and up are as follows:

2. Botanical gardens (World of Wonders (WOW) Children’s Garden)

World of Wonders (WOW) Children’s Garden located within Norfolk Botanical Garden. This is a super fantastic kid friendly garden in Norlfolk, VA that is exciting and beautiful. Children will learn all about numerous plants and plant life. The best part is that it offers some hands on exhibits and is totally geared towards children and what they like. There is also a dirt factory, fountains, bugs, and many other learning opportunities where they can explore new things

The address is: 6700 Azalea Garden Rd., Norfolk, VA 23518, Phone: 757-441-5830

3. One of the largest Planetariums in the World (Morrison Planetarium)

Morrison Planetarium in  Fransisco offers a variety of  educational activities. It is the largest all-digital planetarium in the world. State-of-the-art projector and software technologies allow the planetarium to produce the most accurate and interactive digital Universe ever created. It gives children a chance to see the world from a new “outer space” perspective that broadens their imagination and expands their world view.

“The California Academy of Sciences is home to Steinhart Aquarium, Morrison Planetarium, Kimball Natural History Museum, and world-class research and education programs — all under one living roof. Admission to the Academy is: $29.95 for adults; $24.95 for youth ages 12 to 17, Seniors ages 65+ and students with valid ID; $19.95 for children ages 4 to 11; and free for children ages 3 and younger. The Academy is free to the public on the third Wednesday of each month. Admission fees include all exhibits and shows. Hours are 9:30 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Saturday, and 11:00 am – 5:00 pm on Sunday.” (Source)

4. One of the Largest Aquariums in the world (The Georgia Aquarium)

To a kid this is one of the most fascinating trips you can take your child on. It would be like a journey through the seas into the underworld.

This Aquarium is open 365 days a year. Here are the GPS directions 357 Luckie Street, NW Atlanta, GA 3031.

5. A Primate Center (Duke Lemur Center)

When I was a child I traveled to the Duke University Primate Center and saw endangered lemurs. It was an experience that taught me love and compassion for animals. It is kid-friendly and an intimate experience where children and see and learn about these beautiful animals from Madagascar.

The Duke Lemur Center is located on  3705 Erwin Road in Durham NC. Walking tours are available.
