“Nursery Water” Do Babies Need Flouride?
Posted on April 27, 2011 | No CommentsMy best friend is a dentist and after I had my children she mentioned, in passing, that fluoride wasn’t good for infants. She went on to tell me that babies do not need fluoride; especially before they have teeth. Later, I did some more research to see why I should not give fluoride to my babies. During this time, I was also considering using bottled water and not filtered tap water when supplementing. Specifically, I was looking into using Nursery Water which contains added fluoride. Their target consumers are parents of newborn babies, so here are my reasons for not... -
How to be a Supportive New Dad
Posted on March 16, 2011 | 2 CommentsWhen I first came home with our twins, my husband tried to be supportive, but really had no clue how he should be helping out. However, in a short amount of time he learned very quickly to fulfill the unmet needs around our house. He observed that there were days when I did not have the strength or time to tidy up the house, cook, take care of our little babies, and myself too. I am so thankful that he stepped in and took care of the things I wasn’t able to complete. Here are a few ways that new... -
Breastfeeding: you may struggle, but don’t give up!
Posted on February 9, 2011 | 4 CommentsWhen I decided that my husband and I should start a family, I really wanted to breastfeed. The research on the breast being the best for babies speaks for itself. As a young black mother, I was surprised by the shock from my OBGYN when I shared my desire for wanting to nurse my babies. However, the look on her face showed her approval. As I began my own personal research about breastfeeding, I came across people and articles that stated that black mothers are not breastfeeding their babies as much as other ethnic groups. Whatever the reason, I want... -
Breastfeeding: Ending it My Way
Posted on November 10, 2010 | No CommentsI breastfed my children until they were 24 months. My pediatrician and I agreed that I would continue to nurse for 12 more months after my girl’s first birthday. I enjoyed the bond that me and my kids shared, but at times I wanted a break. Once, I started feeling like I needed more free time. I knew that weening would be around the corner. But at the end of the day, I wanted to make sure that we all were ready and not just me. Below, I list the steps that helped make weening easier. 1. Talk about ending... -
How To Successfully Breastfeed in Public
Posted on July 5, 2010 | No CommentsBefore my children were born I knew that I would be a breastfeeding/nursing mother. I wanted my children to have all the benefits of their mother’s milk because it was formulated just for them. However, after they were born I felt extremely uncomfortable nursing in public. I remember hating being out with my children and needing to feed them. It was really a catch 22 because I needed an outlet and I did not want to stay in doors all day everyday. Consequently, I had to learn how to comfortably breastfeed in public because I didn’t want to hear my... -
Breastfeeding
Posted on May 28, 2010 | 1 CommentOf course there are countless studies describing the importance of breastfeeding, but not to many describe what it is actually like to nurse a newborn baby. During my pregnancy, I read several books and went to a few seminars about the importance of nursing infants, so I figured that because I was armed with the knowledge there wouldn’t be much to it. At the same time though, I was a little unsure about breastfeeding twins simultaneously. Moments after my twins were born and the nurses put my babies on my chest, I froze. -
