Supporting St. Jude on the Hill

2017 was a year of purpose and praise. Each year, the dedicated staff of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital work to fulfill founder Danny Thomas’ dream to ensure that “No child [dies] in the dawn of life.” The mission to fulfill this purpose is ongoing through research that serves children and adults in need of care worldwide. The service that St. Jude provides takes dedication and commitment not only from their staff, but from thousands of people worldwide who give to help cover the hospital’s $1.8 million per day operating cost, so families never receive a bill from St. Jude.  Supporting St. Jude is a life goal for many people who endeavor to provide children with outstanding treatment and care regardless of their families’ financial resources.

Supporting St. Jude on the Hill

December 14, 2017, as a St. Jude Ambassador and committed supporter, I was given the opportunity to attend this year’s St. Jude Holiday on the Hill event. While attending, I had the privilege of meeting many women and men who provide financial support to cover the hospital’s operating cost. Richard Shadyac Jr., the President, and CEO of the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC), which is the foundation that runs St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, energized the room full of supporters. He also thanked the crowd and reiterated the hospital’s steadfast devotion to find cures to end childhood cancer so no child dies from cancer.

Among the charitable givers in the room was Dr. Jacquie Hood Martin who serves as the vice chair of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Sunday of Hope Advisory Council. I spoke with Dr. Martin about her role to assist different church’s nationwide who want to support the hospital as a whole. The money raised by each church is commemorated on a designated day of celebration. Dr. Martin has served this committee for 6 years, as a partner educating others through the hospital’s faith-based initiative. She is delighted to be a part of St. Jude’s life-saving mission.

Ending 2017 with the assurance that others are partnering together to further the work St. Jude is doing gives families new hope. The possibilities for children living with cancer to have a better quality of life are immeasurable because of St. Jude supporters around the world. Thus, the night was full of joy, praise, and a renewed sense of purpose.
