Home Improvements that are Worth It

Home Improvements that are Worth It

It might be time for us to consider investing a bit of time and money into our homes. Maybe we could fix up our homes to make them more attractive, convenient, and comfortable. This wouldn’t just benefit us now, though, but it might also benefit us when we decide that it is time to sell too.

We don’t need to get carried away with renovations though. Even when the real estate market is strong, most of the renovations that we could do will not pay back what they cost. Home improvements should be thought of as consumer goods. You want something that will be a joy to use and one that we are willing to pay for.

That being said, some renovations and improvements that we can make will have more of a resale value than some of the others. Here is a look at some of the best improvements and renovations that you can make to your home.

Energy System from Black Hat Security

Home Security Systems

Installing a home alarm system, like those you can get from Black Hat Security Systems, can actually help to increase the value of your home, aside from offering you protection that is unmatched. Aside from that, it can help to increase the value of the properties in your neighborhood. This is because most burglars will pass by the houses that have home security systems installed. This makes the neighborhood safer and can make property values increase. Having one of these systems might also allow you to pay a lower price on your home insurance premiums.

Solar Panels

If you are looking to decrease your carbon footprint while you add value to your home, try installing some solar panels. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, each dollar that you save when it comes to your energy bills can raise the value of your home by $20. Of course, this depends on a few things, such as, where your home is, how large the solar panel installation is, and the value of your home.

Prehung Steel Door sold on Amazon

Entry Doors

According to US News, one of the top ranking home improvements that you can make is installing steel doors in your entry ways. Getting a new front door can add close to 97% of what you spend on it to the value of the entire house. However, it does need to be the right kind of door. Getting a cheap door won’t add as much value as paying a bit more to get a steel door. Aside from offering you more of a return on your investment, a steel door will also give you more protection.

Kitchen

People tend to spend a lot of time in their kitchens. For this reason, making upgrades in that room will be both valuable and visible. It is more than just aesthetics though. Kitchens have quite a few working parts. This doesn’t need to be something that is all or nothing though. If you have a countertop that is stained and scratched, you can just replace it. You don’t need to mess with the cabinets if they are still in good shape. You might just add a bit of new hardware to the cabinets.

Bathroom

People tend to like bathrooms that are large and expensive. For this reason, any improvement that will add space is good. This could be something like adding a skylight, or snatching a bit of space from an adjoining closet. Things like extra cabinets, modern lighting, and mirrors that are large and bright are also quite desirable. You don’t need to go all out with expensive new tile and plumbing fixtures. If you spend a lot of money on things like special shower heads and fancy faucets, it could be money that is just going to waste.

Windows and Roofs

Nobody will ever want to purchase your home if you have a leaky roof or if plants are actually sprouting in the gutters. Yes, new windows can be an expensive improvement, but they will allow for more of the natural light to get in and can save you a bit of money when it comes to bills for air conditioning. You can recoup about 40% of the cost in your utility bills alone according to US News.
