Sometimes it’s not until a child is school-age that the parents find out their child is considered gifted by state standards. Going through testing can be a headache and stressful for the parents and the child. While on one hand, parents yearn to nourish their child’s talents and skills without sacrificing their innocence and the joy of being a child.
Gifted, the movie, touches on the struggles that families face when encountering a similar situation. It also brings up unique family arrangements that many 21-century families can relate too. Instead of Mary facing the world as a gifted child with her mom and dad at her side, she is cared for by her uncle, who is trying to care for her to the best of his ability. The movie also brings up homeschooling which is becoming more and more popular each year.
Furthermore, my family and I can’t wait to see the movie. One of my daughters is most interested in learning why Fred, the cat, only has one eye. My husband wants to see how the family handled taking care of a child prodigy. I can’t wait to see how Mary blossomed as a child and learned to cope in the regular world after receiving the gifted label.
