We live in a world where young people are more unfit and unhealthy than at any other point in our history. There are more activities today like video games that cause kids to sit for hours mindlessly playing or binge watching shows on Netflix. Whatever the reason, the level of physical exercise that kids get today is a major concern for parents all over the United States.
In order to give your child a chance at a healthy and happy life, physical exercise has to be a part of the routine of life. There are some simple things that we can do to get our kids excited about sports and exercise again.
Get Active Too
One of the best ways to get kids interested in exercise and sports is to get excited about doing these things with them. When they are young, children love playing with their parents and let’s face it, we are the first teacher of our children.
Modeling a healthy lifestyle will allow our children to learn that there is more to do than sit inside and be entertained by modern technology. Get excited about sports and go to sporting events, these moments can spark the interest in sport and create a bond that will last a lifetime between yourself and your children.
Fun and Support Always Wins
People are easy to understand—if they are enjoying what they are doing and having fun, then they are more likely to continue to participate in that activity. If it isn’t fun, then they won’t do it. That means that if you want your kids to be involved in sports, then make sure that the coaching and philosophy is going to make it an enjoyable experience.
Find a sport your child likes to play and share that excitement with them. Many children are turned off from sports because of negative behaviors and comments by their parents. Parents are for support not for coaching, and the outcome of a contest should never matter as much as the content of a child’s character.
Respect Kid’s Choices
Some parents get wrapped up in the dreams and visions that they have for their kids and forget that they are on their own path. Let your children follow and investigate the sports that they are interested in. You may not like soccer but if your kid does, let them pursue it.
The goal is to have a healthy and happy kid participating in sports because they love the game. That love develops through their experience, not yours, so allow your kids to follow their passion and they will do more and become more involved than you ever imagined.
Understand what Makes Sports Special
As adults we rarely remember the simple things that provide great experiences for kids. One simple thing is the uniforms that the activities they are participating in provide. Proper uniforms may seem like a simple thing, but they allow kids to feel special about the sport that they are participating in.
It will make them look forward to “game day” when they get to wear their personalized uniforms and perform at soccer, basketball, baseball or whatever sport they are building a passion about. It has been a fact that when you look good, you feel good and when you feel good you play good. This is the magic of a simple uniform for people to embrace. It is easy to get uniforms today it can be done online cheaply and easily with a minimum amount of planning.
There is no doubt that we can improve the health and wellness of our children by increasing their interest in exercise and sports. The key thing to remember is that it is their experience that is going to encourage or discourage a kid from embracing a healthier or more active lifestyle.
