Smack Dab in the Middle is a story about a husband and wife who do not have children of their own, who cook, converse with, and encourage the neighborhood children. The story takes place in a small Mexican town and focuses on how we are “Smack-Dab in the middle of Abba’s love.”
The title is catchy for a child: “Smack Dab in the Middle.” Every time I said those words my daughters belted-out hardy laughs. The story is sweet, comforting and to the point. It also does a great job of teaching children new Spanish words that they could easily remember and become familiar with.
The more I read the story to my girls the more I liked it. However, at first I questioned who the audience really was and if the wording was such that children would even enjoy the story. The story brings up good points/questions that children may have regarding God. Willie Juan the main character answers their questions with care and ease. It also provides an opportunity for you to help your children understand their significance and importance in relationship to God.
Would I recommend the book? Maybe. It wasn’t one of my favorites, but the overall message about God loving little children is profound. Therefore, I would rate the book a 3 out of 5.
